Week 1 Top Performers 2020 High School Football Season
Who would have thought a few short months ago that we would be playing high school football? But on Thursday night with Louisville and Dover the 2020 season was underway! Yes, in typical 2020 fashion we had to deal with quite a bit of rain and delays into Saturday but that didn't prevent the enjoyment many felt across the state as the lights shined down on the players on Friday night, a welcome sight to all and a part of the fabric of Americana.
Let's take a look at some of the top performers in the area for Week 1, starting with our Big Time Sports TV games.
Hayden Vinas QB (Perry Panthers) What a game for Hayden Vinas on our Big Time Sports game of the week, leading Perry to a 21-3 win over Lake. We heard rumblings leading up to the start of the season that this Perry team may actually become an air attack team, a 180 from usual Keith Wakefield coached teams. Vinas completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jovoni Lapajna. Vinas also got it done with his feet including a 27-yard run that set up a Josh Lemon TD.
Logan Ortt RB/LB (New Philadelphia) Ortt dominated the game for the Quakers on both sides of the ball in a convincing 40-7 win over Canton Central Catholic. In the first half Ortt broke free on a 97-yard TD run and followed that up in the 2nd half with a 59-yard interception return for a touchdown. A player to keep an eye on the rest of the season on a loaded New Philadelphia team.
Jordan Mick QB (Northwest) Maybe the biggest statement win of the weekend in our coverage area was the 42-7 win by Northwest over Orrville (a team that beat them last year at Northwest). Mick was a big reason for the win throwing for over 400 yards passing with 5 TD's. The DeMarco era starts off with a bang in Northwest.
Connor Ashby/Brock Henne QB/WR (Hoover) One of the better combos in Northeast Ohio these two connected for two touchdown passes in their 35-7 win over GlenOak. Ashby finished the day going 9/14 for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Elijah Wesley QB (McKinley) The Bulldogs lived up to the preseason hype with a 30-0 win over Jackson. Wesley was the engine that drove the Bulldogs going for 10/17 passing for 231 yards and two touchdowns along with 155 yards on the ground and a TD.
Ben Petro RB (Sandy Valley) 97 yards rushing and two TD's for the talented Cardinals running back who along with Cam Blair might have the most explosive offense in the area. Sandy Valley opened up the season with an impressive 51-13 win over Strasburg.
Garrett Newsome QB (Garaway) Newsome did a little bit of everything Friday night, showcasing why he is one of the best QB's in the IVC. He carried the ball 11 times for 169 yards and two TD's and was 16/24 passing for 209 yards and two TD's in the Pirates 35-0 win over East Canton.
