Week 3 Top Performers 2020 High School Football Season
It's crazy to think but we are now halfway through the 2020 high school football season! I know it's not the situation we could have possibly imagined a year ago but we are all thankful that we are at least enjoying some semblance of high school football here in September. A lot of great performances in week 3 so let's get to it, and now that we are halfway through the season I'm going to take a look at the Stark County Player of the Year race and the top candidates for the award.
Elijah Wesley QB (McKinley Bulldogs) McKinley got their first test of the season on Friday in a familiar foe that always seems to play them tough-the Lake Blue Streaks. The Bulldogs were only up a touchdown heading into the 4th quarter but once again it was their talented quarterback that led them to victory. While he struggled in the passing game (5 for 15 for 46 yards and an interception) he more than made up for it on the ground with 14 carries for 161 yards and 2 touchdown's. The Bulldogs might be the best team in Stark County and they will have the chance to prove it this week against Perry in our Big Time Sports TV game of the week.
Brandon Foster RB (McKinley Bulldogs) While McKinley struggled through the air in their 26-17 win over Lake it was Foster that solidified the ground attack for the pups to lead them to victory. Foster ended the day with 26 carries for 171 yards and a touchdown and making the case that McKinley might have the most explosive one-two punch in along with quarterback Elijah Wesley.
Trent Chavers RB (Canton South Wildcats ) One of the hottest teams in Stark County coach Greg Reed and the Canton South Wildcats improved to 3-0 on Friday with a 55-20 win over Minerva. It was the explosiveness of running back Chavers that was once again on display with 11 carries for 120 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Jack Talkington QB (Canton Central Catholic Crusaders) The Crusaders got their first win of the season on Friday (28-21 over Licking Valley) and it was the talented sophomore QB Talkington that led the way. He went 12 of 18 for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns (along with 1 interception). Talkington has been impressive for the Crusaders and has shown that he will be a leader for this team for the next several years.
Aaron Kovalchik Fairless Player of the Week (for all your legal needs call the law offices of Aaron Kovalchik at 330-453-2772)
Conner Durant WR (Fairless Falcons) The Falcons suffered their first loss of the season in a hard fought game against Manchester 7-0. Durant though did everything he could to try and give Fairless the win with 10 catches for 130 yards the Panthers defense had a difficult time containing him on the field. The Falcons will look to bounce back with a win against Triway.
Brendan Craig RB (Jackson Polar Bears) Jackson got their fist win of the season in a back and forth game against GlenOak 22-20. It was Craig that provided the the spark for the Polar Bears with 19 carries for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Junior running back is gradually getting better each week and proving he can fill the shoes of the talented Ethan Adkins who graduated last year.
Trevor VanHorn QB (Green Bulldogs) Another impressive showing from VanHorn on Friday night to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 start with a 40-20 win over Brush. VanHorn accounted for 4 of the Bulldogs touchdowns going 17-26 for 265 yards and 3 touchdowns and adding one on the ground as well. Watch out for this talented QB and the Bulldogs the rest of the way out.
Trey Martin WR (Green Bulldogs) The Martin name might be synonymous with basketball in Green but Trey is proving they can do it on the football field as well. A favorite target of VanHorn on Friday night Martin had 8 catches for 111 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Aaron Kovalchik Hoover Player of the Week (for all your legal needs call the law offices of Aaron Kovalchik at 330-453-2772)
Brock Henne WR (Hoover Vikings) Henne is one of the bigger targets you will find in Stark County and he combined his size and play-making ability on Friday night to almost secure a win for the Vikings. He caught 7 passes for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Vikings loss to Perry 20-14.
Josh Lemon RB (Perry Panthers) Our player of the game in their win over Hoover Lemon was outstanding for the Panther-especially in the 2nd half. He finished the day with 25 carries for 192 yards and a touchdown and is solidifying himself as a solid contender for Stark County Player of the Year.
Zach Catrone QB (Massillon Tigers) Catrone returned from injury on Friday night to lead the Tigers to an impressive 24-0 win over a very talented Warren Harding team. Catrone went 21-31 209 yards and a TD and spread the ball around to 7 different receivers. Even though he threw 2 interceptions Catrone provided leadership for the Tigers in an impressive shutout win.
Jordan Mick QB (Northwest Indians) Mick continues to put up unbelievable numbers as the Indians are now 3-0 on the season after defeating Triway 31-7. Mick threw for 337 yards and went 16-30 with 2 touchdowns and also added two more on the ground for 87 yards. Through 3 games Mick is 45-71 for 1,067 yards and 12 TD passes.
Braden Mick WR (Northwest Indians) Mick to Mick is becoming a popular phrase in Canal Fulton as brother Braden was a favorite target of his older brother and provided a highlight worthy play for a touchdown with 5 receptions and 103 yards on Friday night.Gabe Tingle QB (Ridgewood Generals) It was a battle of two of the top quarterbacks in division 5 and it was Tingle and the Generals who came out on top in a dominant 42-7 win over Sandy Valley. Tingle accounted for 365 total yards of offense along with 6 touchdowns as Ridgewood improved to 3-0 on the season.
Logan Yoder KR (Garaway Pirates) Yoder had an explosive run for a touchdown that gave the Pirates a critical 13-6 lead before the end of the half on their way to a 34-19 win over Indian Valley. The sophomore escaped a couple of tackles on the return and helped improve the Pirates to a 3-0 start on the season on our Big Time Sports TV Game of the Week.
