THE TEAMS
CANTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC (1-1)
The Crusaders return home following back-to-back road trips to open the season. Canton Central started the year with a 51-28 loss to Perry, but rebounded for a 36-35 nail-biter victory over Norwayne in which the Crusaders outscored the Bobcats 15-7 in the fourth quarter.
Crusaders quarterback Jack Talkington scored a go-ahead two-point conversion after Alex Anderson's touchdown to seal the victory for Central. The senior QB finished that game with 165 rushing yards and two ground scores, along with 140 passing yards on 16-of-23 passing. He has 269 rushing yards and four touchdowns so far this season - both Canton Central highs.
Anderson, also a senior, scored a pair of touchdowns in the Crusaders' win over Norwayne, while junior receiver Jimmy Kayne caught six passes for a team-best 56 receiving yards.
SOUTH RANGE (2-0)
The Raiders have faired well in their opening pair of regular season contests: a 37-7 blowout opener over Springfield, and a 42-14 drubbing at University School. The reigning Division V state semifinalists also have a 23-game regular season game win streak, dating back to 2019.
Range has outscored opponents 79-21 so far this season, and its defense has already forced four interceptions on opposing passers (including three in the Raiders' Week 2 win over the Preppers).
The Raiders' offense has also produced well, posting a 21-0 advantage after the opening quarter last Friday. Quarterback Billy Skripac is coming off a 2021 season in which he threw for 2,351 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, with just three interceptiions.
