MASSILLON - In a back-and-forth Federal League thriller, the GlenOak Golden Eagles outlasted the Jackson Polar Bears in overtime, 70-62, to force a three-way tie atop the conference standings.
After both teams were tied at 18-all in the opening quarter, the Eagles took a 33-24 lead at halftime as Jackson struggled from the 3-point line (3-15). However, after the Polar Bears cut the lead to 47-44 at the end of the third quarter, GlenOak was held scoreless for the first five minutes of the final period.
The two teams were tied at 54-54 with half a minute remaining before Jaylen McElroy's steal and breakaway layup to give GlenOak a 56-54 lead, but Anthony Fuline - who totaled eight points for the contest - drilled a mid-range jumper with nine seconds left to tie the game. Ja'Corey Lipkins's following 3-point attempt missed, and the game went into extra time.
It was in that fifth period that the Eagles jumped out to a 10-4 scoring run and outscored the Polar Bears, 14-6, to close out the game and boost their record to 15-4 (7-3 Federal).
Lipkins finished the game with a team-best 19 points - including an 8-of-8 performance from the free throw line - while Bryce Broom added 17 points on a 6-of-9 outing from the field. McElroy totaled 11 points for the Eagles, as well as team highs in rebounds (seven) and steals (five).
Owen Woolbert posted a double-double for the Polar Bears (12-5, 7-3) with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Kyle Monterrubio had 19 points and nine boards. Fuline also led Jackson with four assists.
The two schools are now tied for first place in the Federal League, along with the Green Bulldogs (13-4, 7-3), with two regular season games remaining.
