Kobe Mitchell has fit in with the Walsh University men’s basketball program seamlessly.
The former Harrison Central High School standout and Ohio Division III Player of the Year is averaging 18.4 points per game in his first season as a Cavalier after transferring from the University of Akron.
Mitchell, a 6-2 sophomore shooting guard, leads the team in scoring (18.4), field goal percentage (46 percent), 3-point shooting (39 percent) and free throw percentage (88 percent).
The Cavs (9-3, 3-3) won their fourth straight game on Saturday after a 60-53 road win against the Lake Erie Storm in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest at Painesville.
Mitchell led all scorers with 21 points while shooting 5 of 10 from 3-point land and grabbing 6 rebounds.
Mitchell spent the past couple of seasons in a crowded Akron backcourt and was looking for a little more playing time.
Walsh obliged.
Mitchell, a full-time player again, hit five 3-pointers and scored 20 points in Walsh’s season-opening win over Grand Valley State and was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the week.
It feels like old times at Harrison Central where he scored 2,421 career points.
Mitchell's first impressions in a Walsh uniform were eye-popping as he hit nine 3s and scored 32 points in an exhibition win over Division I Oakland. The nine triples were a career best for Mitchell.
As a junior at Harrison Central, the son of Tonya and DeWayne Mitchell averaged 34.1 points per game and notched a career-high 49 points against Steubenville.
He led Harrison Central to a 13-9 overall record and 5-4 league mark by adding 8.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.6 steals per game to his junior totals, was named Division III District 5 Player of the Year and earned second team All-Ohio honors.
He averaged 30.1 points per game his senior season at Harrison Central and was named the Division III Player of the Year.
Mitchell was also the starting quarterback for the 2020 Huskies football team. He led the squad to a 6-4 overall record. Mitchell completed 132-of-213 passes for 2,058 total yards and 21 touchdowns.
The Walsh men will look to continue this winning streak as they travel for a rivalry game against Malone on Thursday.
