Tojh Nicholson is set to become the next head coach of Sandy Valley High School's girls' varsity basketball team, according to a press release published by the school on Tuesday.
Nicholson was hired by the Sandy Valley Local School District on Monday's Board of Education meeting.
“I’m extremely excited to be given the chance of leading this program into the future,” Nicholson said via the release. About his new team, Nicholson said, “We have such talented, hard-working young women that make it fun to come to practice every day. They are leaders in and outside of this school and I’m blessed to lead them. I can’t wait to get started!”
Nicholson will succeed former longtime Cardinals head coach McBride, who retired last month.
“We wish Coach McBride the best as he will be retiring from Sandy Valley after the 2023-2024 year," said Sandy Valley athletic director Garth Evans. "We are pleased to have Coach Nicholson as the next girls’ varsity coach. He brings over 18 years of coaching experience to the team and is a life-long Cardinal.”
McBride also shared his approval of Nicholson as his successor: “I’m excited that Tohj Nicholson will be the new Sandy Valley Girls’ Basketball head coach. He has spent countless hours teaching and coaching. I hope the Sandy Valley community will bestow the same graciousness on him that they have with me.”
Nicholson has worked within the Cardinals' basketball program for over 17 seasons, including a stint as an assistant coach during the 2022-23 season.
The Cardinals finished 8-15 this past season, including a tied-for-last-place 2-10 finish in the Inter-Valley Conference's South Division.
