The Ohio High School Athletic Association will support and promote the annual Esports Ohio state tournament this May.
The Esports Ohio state tournament is scheduled for May 20-21 at the University of Akron, with regional tournaments preceeding the state event around May 6-7. Winning schools will be presented with trophies in similar styles used by the OHSAA for its 28 sanctioned sports.
"Participation in Esports is growing very rapidly and Esports Ohio has been a big part of making it an educational and competitive opportunity for students,” says OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute. “The opportunity for these students to be a part of a team and represent their school is very exciting. We are excited to work with an Ohio-based organization that is made up of teachers and school people.”
According to the Esports Ohio website, there are 115 member schools in the Buckeye state, with students now able to earn varsity letters. Area schools associated with Esports Ohio include: Caldwell, Claymont, Conotton Valley, Hiland, Indian Creek, John Glenn, Uniontown Lake, Mansfield, Meadowbrook, Minerva, Newcomerstown, and Ridgewood.
Esports Ohio has a seven-week regular season, from the end of January to the middle of March. Registration deadlines end on Jan. 23, with the first week of official competition beginning Jan. 30.
Games recognized by the ESO for competition include: Clash Royale, League of Legends, Fortnite, Overwatch 2, Chess, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, SMITE, and Valorant.
