The Cleveland Browns are planning to hire Jim Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator, according to reports from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and ESPN's Dianna Russini.
Schwartz, who worked as a personnel scout for the Browns from 1993 to 1995, will return to a role he has operated in for three other NFL teams: the Tennessee Titans (2001-08), the Buffalo Bills (2014), and the Philadelphia Eagles (2016-20). Schwartz's tenure with the Eagles resulted in a Super Bowl LII victory over the New England Patriots. He was also the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2013, compiling a record of 29-51 with a postseason appearance in 2011.
Over the last two seasons, Schwartz had worked in the Titans' organization as a senior defensive assistant.
Schwartz's past defenses have placed notable emphases on strong defensive line play and dominating interior linemen units. Each of his defensive coordinator stints has resulted in at least one of his defensive tackles being named to the NFL All-Pro First Team or the Pro Bowl: Albert Haynesworth in Tennessee, Ndamukong Suh in Detroit, Marcell Dareus in Buffalo, and Fletcher Cox in Philadelphia.
The Browns began their search for a new defensive coordinator a week ago, following their firing of Joe Woods after three seasons. In addition to Schwartz, other candidates included Steelers linebackers coach Brian Flores, Seahawks associate head coach Sean Desai (who interviewed with the Browns on Monday), and Eagles defensive pass game coordinator/defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson.
